    Ellen and Donna's Arctic Adventure

In search of Sedna, and our quest for truth about climate change we left the Mothership on August 16 and flew out of Albuquerque this morning. We are currently in the Atlanta airport, mid route to Montreal where we will meet our travel companions and fly together to Kangerlussuaq,Greenland.

In Greenland, we begin our explorations by ship, traveling up the coast of Western Greenland and then across the Northwest Passage to Nome, Alaska. The Arctic is without question a political hot spot. We look forward to visiting remote communities in Western Greenland and remote arctic communities.

Weather and sea ice can rapidly change to impact your exploration in unforeseen ways. Scientific reports we’ve read and documentaries we’ve watched are beautiful and heart wrenching. We know that it has been the hottest summer on record in many parts of the world and that the ice sheets are melting far more rapidly than predicted. The people of the far north are experiencing habitat loss, environment toxicity, regime shifts, and melting glaciers leading to climate change refuges. It takes time to prepare physically and emotionally. When you travel to remote unpopulated parts of the world it is not possible to pick up a forgotten essential, but what in fact is essential as you try to pack for your journey to Sedna’s lands.

Cruising the Uummannaq Fjord System I must go North again! My heart is where the white mist lies About the roots of starlit rags beneath the Arctic skies. Where through the dusk the Dancers play across the northern pole; I must go North again, for they have stolen away my soul…” —Isobel Wylie...

When we began our blog, we raised concerns about what we would see and how we might experience climate change. We knew before setting out that weather and sea ice change rapidly and could impact our exploration in unforeseen ways. By now most people who have been following our journey know we did...
